Amanda Poem Class 10th Main Points

Main Points of the Poem

1.         The little girl Amanda is biting her nails and her mother stops her from doing so.

2.         Then she tells Amanda not to slouch(झुकाना) her shoulders and tells her to sit up straight. Her mother also asks her to lift up her shoulders and adopt the right posture.

3.  Amanda is lost in a world of dreams and fantasy(कल्पना लोक, imagined).

4.  She imagines herself as a mermaid who lives in a peaceful emerald(हरा,green) sea all alone and moves around freely and blissfully.

5.  Amanda’s mother asks if she has finished her homework, tidied her room and reminds her that she had told her to clean her shoes and that she hasn’t done so.

6.  But Amanda has again drifted to the world of dreams and fantasy.

7.  She imagines that she is an orphan who roams around the streets freely and walks on the soft dust with her bare feet drawing designs on it.

8.  She loves silence, and freedom to live her life as per her wishes.

9. In the real world Amanda’s mother stops her from eating chocolate.

10. And reminds her that eating chocolate might cause her acne problem.

11. Then her mother tells Amanda that she must not look the other way when her mother is speaking to her.

12. Amanda withdraws into her fantasy world for the last time so that she can escape from her mother’s nagging.

13. She imagines herself to be Rapunzel. Rapunzel is a German fairy tale

14. She imagines that she is perfectly happy to live alone in the tower, for she has nothing to worry about. Life over there is peaceful, and solitary.

15. In fact, she is so happy with her life that she will never let down her hair in an attempt to escape from the tower or to allow anyone inside.

16. In the last stanza, Amanda’s mother tells her to stop sulking.

17. She also accuses her daughter of having mood swings very frequently.

18. Finally, she tells Amanda that anyone who saw her would think that her mother has been nagging her.

19. It is obvious that Amanda’s mother feels it is her duty to correct her daughter and to teach her the proper way to behave.

20. She does not realize that this can be an exhausting or irritating experience for Amanda.

Amanda

Setting of the poem: 4 different settings

The 1st setting is that of the real world, in which Amanda’s mother is forever trying to alter her posture or her behaviour. On the other hand, the other 3 settings are fanciful ones constructed by Amanda in her own mind. These are the realms(दुनिया) to which she escapes when she is tired of listening to her mother finding faults in her.

1. One of these settings is that of the sea, in which Amanda imagines herself to be a mermaid.

2. Another one of these settings is that of the street, in which Amanda imagines herself to be an orphan child.

3. The last of these settings is that of a tower, in which Amanda imagines herself to be the imprisoned princess known as Rapunzel.

These 3 settings form a contrast to the real world in which Amanda and her mother live.

Style

The poem contains 7 stanzas. The 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th stanzas are made up of 4 lines each, and are spoken by an authoritative person in Amanda’s life, perhaps her mother.

The 2nd, 4th and 6th stanzas are written within brackets, are made up of 3 lines each, and are spoken by Amanda herself. Hence, the entire poem consists of 25 lines in total.

Each of the stanza spoken by her mother follows the rhyme scheme: aa ba. The last word of the first, second and fourth lines are the same. On the other hand, the stanzas spoken by Amanda consist of the three rhyming lines each.

Metaphor has been used effectively as a poetic device in 2nd, 4th and 6th stanzas. Amanda imagines herself first as a mermaid, then as an orphan and finally becomes Rapunzel.

Fire and Ice Robert Frost CBSE Class 10 Chapter 1

ü Fire and Ice is one of Robert Frost's shortest poems.

ü It introduces to the reader the profound idea that the world could end in one of two ways, with fire or ice, through desire or hate.

ü Fire is desire, ice is hate.

ü Frost has introduced the narrator to provide his personal view on the question of the end of the world.

ü The narrator after considering his personal experience with desire and passion, first concludes that the world must end in fire.

ü Yet, after considering his experience with “ice,” or hatred, the narrator acknowledges that ice would be equally destructive. These powerful emotions can drag the world toward a catastrophic end.

                                         The central theme

ü The central theme of "Fire and Ice" is that human emotions are destructive when allowed to get out-of-control. They can destroy a person morally; they can destroy him mentally and physically.

ü Not frequently, unbridled emotions—such as those of an Adolf Hitler—can destroy entire countries and even threaten to destroy civilization itself.

ü Terrorists driven by hatred could destroy a civilization or even end the world

ü Fire stands for greed, conflict, avarice, fury, cruelty, lust.

ü Ice stands for insensitivity, coldness, intolerance, indifference, rigidity, hatred.

                                Main Points of the Poem

1.  1.  On the basis of what people say the poet concludes that this world of ours will come to an end.

2.   2. The end will occur by two highly contrasting but powerful elements of nature — fire and ice.

3.   3. Then the poet links these two powerful natural elements to human beings and their emotions.

4.4.   He links the element of fire to desires or passions.

5. 5.   The uncontrolled fire of passion and desire may lead us to the end of this world.

6. 6.   Then, the poet comes to the second alternative that can cause the end of this world. It is ‘ice’ which can also cause the end of the world.

7.   7. In terms of human emotion, ice means ‘hate’ created by ‘cold reasoning’.

Amanda Poem Class 10 English Central Idea

                                                 Central Idea

This poem describes several encounters between Amanda and her mother, in which her mother always corrects her behaviour, telling her to sit up straight and not to sulk, to clean her room and not to have chocolates. In response, Amanda withdraws into a world of fantasy and imagines herself to be in other situations than her own – as a mermaid, as an orphan and as the princess Rapunzel.

In childhood, we are happy to listen to fairy tales and believe in them. But at some point of time or the other, we all have to grow up. One part of growing up is leaving fairy tales behind and learning to accept reality as it is. Hence, we must get used to having our own set of responsibilities, such as doing our homework or keeping our rooms clean.

This is a part of every child’s growth into adolescence and then adulthood. But Amanda wants to indulge in fantasies than clean her room or her shoes. She wants to postpone growing up and would like to remain a child for just a little bit longer.

The Little Fir Tree Explanation in Hindi

 The Little Fir Tree

The story starts with the main character Shetty who was walking while it was raining, so he stopped and took the help of the little fir tree. After the rain stopped, the magician wanted to reward the little fir tree for his kindness. The magician asked for 4 wishes from the tree. The tree was very sad as there were no birds who used to make the nest because of the needle-like leaves of the fir tree. So, it wished for green leaves which were granted by the magician. But, soon after he got the green leaves, he got very worried as the goat used to come and eat the green leaves. So, the tree wished for golden leaves because the goat does not eat the golden tree. The following morning, the tree was full of joy as their wish was also granted.

However, a man would come and try to steal the golden leaves, which made him very disappointed. He further thought of having glass leaves which would not be taken by any goat or a man. To his surprise, the next morning, he found that this wish was also granted. He was so happy to have the glass leaves. But, the following day, the wind blew and shone off all the glass leaves. He was very sad, and he wished for the same old needle-like leaves as they would not be eaten by goats, or taken by any men or harmed by the wind. The next morning, he found the old-needle like leaves, and he exclaimed that he was never so happy. 2.3 The Moral This story teaches the student to accept themselves and not to desire for unnecessary things.
